Economic Development
Construction of the New Renaissance Collaborative Senior Village
On August 26, 2009 Alderman Dowell along with Pat Abrams, Executive DIrector of The Renaissance Collaborative (TRC), broke ground for phase one of TRC's Senior Village located at 346 E. 53rd Street. In conjunction with TRC, Alderman Dowell was pleased to lend support to this ambitious project including the provision of TIF funding and city-owned land. The Renaissance Collaborative's village concept for seniors promotes the senior's ability to live in a supportive environment for those who require assistance as well as for independent seniors and seniors who are raising dependents. The goal is to create a sense of community. The first building will have 71 units and will support physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. It will feature a community kitchen, library, and wellness center.
Third Ward Parade of Homes
In an effort to address issues of development, affordable housing, and environment, Alderman Dowell and other City officials are planning to redevelop about 80 parcels of land in the Third Ward. Eighty percent of these will be affordable housing units with the other 20% being market-rate. Developers are required to use eco-friendly materials which means all of these developments will environmentally-friendly, green single family homes. The Parade area includes the 3900 to 4900 blocks of South Calumet Avenue, the 4400 to 4800 blocks of South Prairie Avenue, and the 5200 and 5300 blocks of South Emerald. Of the seven developers, five are African-American owned with one being led by a woman. This is an effort to ensure this development benefits all Third Ward residents by bringing diversity to the projects. The proposal is expected to be introduced at the September 9th City Council Meeting.
